Shadow Breathing is aptly named for the breath of mystery it animates. Julie Flanders’ poems inhabit the territory between song and poem, playing in the cadences of sound and silence, conjuring an interior music in the reader. Longing and fulfillment reach toward each other in this work, evoking a potent sense of urgency and desire. Flanders sings in the language of the heart, moving through darkness with courage and beauty, always leading us toward a promise of light.
DOUBTS, a poem from Shadow Breathing with animation by Phoebe Cavise and a score by Emil Adler is both a light and serious reminder to believe in something better than your uncertainties. Conveyed with love and whimsy this short film is meant to shift and elevate the spirit of the viewer.
Joyride is a powerful collection of poems suffused with love, loss and redemption. Crafted in simple, lyrical language with a music all its own, the poems sing stories that are at once mysterious and accessible. The natural imagery and conversational tone of Flanders’ voice gives us the feeling of overhearing secrets that we understand to be our own. Some of the deeper questions of what it means to be human find expression here, too, as Flanders mines the ordinary of the everyday for extraordinary gifts of insight and epiphany. There is a compelling tension of opposites in this work - sadness and joy, rage and celebration, beauty and dirt.
Though quite distinct from her lyrics for internationally acclaimed recording artist October Project, these poems do share some common elements of theme and voice with Flanders' other work.
The book is notably beautiful in its design by Reed Seifer and Mick Wieland, with a stunning cover image by Tanya Braganti.
